Growing Cherry

Climate Requirements

  • One of the most important climate factors in cultivation cherry is the heat; cherries cannot resist to overheated temperature. They like areas with fresh summers. Even though the woods of cherries and sour cherries can resist to very low temperature, blooms freeze at -2°C.
  • Precipitations towards the blossoming period are harmful since they prevent pollination and precipitations towards the ripening period are harmful due to causing cracks in the fruits.
  • In order to get good quality products, cherries and sour cherries should get chilled sufficiently in winter. If this requirement doesn't get fulfilled, they shake off their buds and blossom irregularly.

Region and Direction

  • Areas with good natural drainage, which are free from frosts and secluded from northern winds, are suitable for cherry cultivation. Slant places are even more suitable since they have natural drainage in case of watering. The danger of erosion in such places can be overcome by cultivating and soil productivity can be increased by fertilization.

Soil Requirements

  • Well-drained and very productive soils that are convenient for ventilation and watering during the summertime are suitable for cherry and sour cherry cultivation. In these kinds of soils, trees don’t get degummed, grow healthy and bear large, good quality fruits. In the heavy soils that don’t get ventilated sufficiently, trees grow weak, get degummed and fruits have less edible parts.
