Growing Trabzon Persimmons

  • Trabzon persimmon is a subtropical climate fruit and also it is adapted to the moderate climatic conditions. Since its tree shed its leaves in winter, it is more resistant to low winter temperature compared to other subtropical fruit varieties. Generally, it can resist up to -12ºC, moreover, there are varieties that can resist up to -18 ºC.
  • Most of the Trabzon persimmon varieties require winter rest for 200-400 hours under 7,2 ºC. In the coastline of Mediterranean Region, the tree blossoms at the end of April.
  • Since Trabzon persimmons blossom late they don’t get affected by early spring frosts.
  • Varieties require a long period of time, 140 to 160 days, in order to ripen the fruits. Varieties that can be eaten when they are firm, those that are not astringent, require more heat in total compared to other varieties in order to ripen their fruits.
  • Trabzon persimmons want high air humidity and bear the highest quality fruits in the humid regions. In the areas with low humidity, good quality fruits can be produced by irrigating.
  • Trabzon persimmon trees generally don’t get harmed by winds. However in the windy regions, fruits can be damaged in the leaves and branches in fall, the time of ripening, and this reduces the quality of the fruit. Persimmon trees have very brittle branches; therefore strong winds may break the branches that are loaded with fruits. In order to prevent this, branches should be definitely supported by the stakes.
  • The most compatible soils for Trabzon persimmons are medium heavy, rich in organic matter and well-drained soils. In the soils with 6,5 -7,0 pH scale, cultivation gives good results. In addition to that, persimmons are suitable for various soil types ranging from light to very heavy. It can grow in the soils with lime content up to 20 percent.
